As the Muslim community began to grow exponentially throughout the 80’s and 90’s, Esha-Atul Islam’s dedication to education became evident through its renowned Maktab (Evening School). It was this Maktab, an evening school noted for its high-quality Arabic language and grammar education, which rocketed the centre to fame and heightened its popularity within the borough. This popularity was so high, that parents from far and wide began enrolling their children at the Maktab.

This, however, was during a turbulent time for the Muslim community in the borough and beyond, with many reports of racially aggravated incidents. Esha-Atul Islam responded to this promptly by again demonstrating their commitment to educating the future generation, establishing a minibus service to resonate a positive ‘if you can’t get here, we’ll bring you here’ attitude.

Since 1983, Esha-Atul Islam has been a key institution in support of local charities, achieved the title of ‘Madrasah’ and began to award MA equivalent degrees and became among the first Shariah Councils in the UK, opposing injustices, oppression and abuse. Esha-Atul Islam has also dealt with a myriad of personal issues over the years, such as teenage pregnancies, counselling support and was a key voice for the Muslim community in the 80’s and 90’s, campaigning for equality, halal food and even took it upon themselves to go into mainstream schools to teach for free in order to portray the true light of Muslims.

Esha-Atul Islam has also developed and taught many people who have gone on to become respectable leaders, serving their communities. Today, over 30 years since the founding of the centre, many of the centre’s early students are dropping off their own children every day to study at Esha-Atul Islam, proving that the legacy is indeed living on.
